Is it safe to download the CEC for free online? Just was reading some other thread that downloading the american one could be a $100k fine.

Where is a good place to buy the actual book? I just want the download to put on my phone.

Also random question. Currently looking for an apprenticeship, someone told me to avoid the union because they require you to travel alot and will put you up in hotels wherever the work is. Any truth to that?

I don't think I would mind that actually could be fun.

You can download for free from some pirate torrent website. Shouldn't get in trouble, but no guarantees. You can buy it (download) from the CSA website.

If it is free then it isn't legal- IMO. But hey it is hard to resist a freebie. Please don't post any links to it on this site as they can cause issues.

Apparently the CEC is of the public domain , where the NEC is not

CSA doesn't give anything away for free!

Because then, CSA wouldn't make as much money. Why do you they think the code now changes every 3 years?

Canada has funny rules that protect people.. so most things are grey area.. "pirated" material has been in that grey area for a long time.

The government (pushed by big money) are working had to change that and turn us all into criminals. Canadians are some of the biggest pirates.. but it's because we're so gouged. When given a good alternative, like Netflix, piracy goes down.

I've also never heard of anyone getting in trouble for downloading anything pirated off the internet. I bet that'll change in the next few years.

You get in trouble here if you "make profit" off illegal downloads. If your an employee I wouldn't worry but if your the employer I would think twice. All it takes is for someone to claim your using the code book for profit (which would be hard). Now that being said I am a electrician not a lawyer but we have heard a horror story of someone using autocad electrical without a license and got fined a large amount. Which make sense because no Canadian would ever pay for it if we didnt have to....ok that sounded bad...

I bought the code, book so they get my money there, if i have one in PDF on my phone for quick reference big deal. I perfer to use the book, find it easier to read this way.

You can find it on pirate bay, I downloaded it. It's nice to use "find", very helpful.

I'm sure CSA is working diligently at turning the CEC into an app, and ditching the shareable PDF file.

Can't say I wouldn't mind something more cross referenced and easier to use than the PDF. Things like if a rule references another rule, you can click it and it'll take you to that other rule, or table or appendix whatever..etc. Or maybe include the CEC Handbook into the code as a clickable link.. so you can get their interpretation or additional info instantly.

I'd pay $9.99/mo for that easily! Which could be $120/yr or $360/code cycle. They'd be getting much more out of my pocket than they currently are… but at least I'd have a more useful and easier code to reference.
